Spring Has Sprung – The Robins Are Here?

Print Friendly

Robins 2March came in with a blast of cold wintry air and a light dusting of snow at our house last night.  This morning the snow gave way to watering the dry winter-worn grass.  As I stood by the window taking it all in my eyes began to adjust to what I was actually seeing.  Robins! Robins everywhere!  I grabbed my camera (and a coat) and headed outside.  As I stood in our yard and made a complete 360 degree turn I saw robins hopping around the yard. Hundreds of them … okay, maybe dozens of them – but a lot no matter what! Does this mean spring is here? After all, robins are a sign of spring, right?
RobinsDo you see 6 1/2 robins in this picture?  After a bit of research I found this not to be a true sign of spring.

Robins 3Although some robins do migrate, it’s more a matter of food availability than the weather.  Food is usually more scarce in the winter.  So some robins do migrate… but not all.

Robin singleInstead they tend to gather in large flocks during colder months, going to large communal roosts at night.  These flocks tend to stay in more rural areas where there is a better food supply.  Or sheltered in woods which surround our home.  So although they may not be so readily seen in some places, especially in a more urban environment, there are still robins around in rural areas like mine.

Robins 4Alas, it is still 33 degrees outside. The roads are wet with sleet and rain and snow. The yard is a little greener than yesterday.  And I saw robins – lots of them.  All in all a beautiful start to a lovely day.

Matthew 6:25-34  Soul Food for today

Do Not Be Anxious

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?[a] 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

34 Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
