Crock Pot Baked Potatoes

Have you ever baked potatoes in your Crock Pot?  Why would you? I can think of several reasons.  On this particular day I was going to be gone all afternoon and when I got home I put some meat on the grill for supper.  I wanted the potatoes done at the same time.  The outside temperatures have been 90 degrees and 90% humidity and so turning on my oven wasn’t appealing.

I washed 6 medium size potatoes and wrapped them in foil. I placed them in my Crock Pot for 4 hours on high. They were moist, fully cooked and really lovely to eat.

Potatoes to bake
There is no need to put water or anything else in the Crock Pot. Depending on the size of the potato the time can range from 2 1/2 to 4 hours on high. You can also fill your Crock Pot with potatoes in the morning and place on low for 8 hours or so and they will be ready when you are.

Baked potato

Sometimes we have a baked potato supper where I simply bake up some bigger potatoes. Then we top with chili, or broccoli, or sour cream and butter and call it “supper!”  🙂

Now, I will admit to you we are a house divided when it comes to how we liked our potatoes baked.  I like potatoes baked in foil while my Chief potato eater and my sous-chef dish-washing mom likes them a little crusty without foil.  Because I am an equal-pleaser cook, today I lightly oiled the potatoes with olive oil, sprinkled on some kosher salt and baked them without the foil.

These potatoes are “home-grown” by The Chief’s 93-year-old uncle.  The outside skins are a little gnarly but the luscious, creamy white inside more than makes up for the outside appearance.

Baked Potao, Steak, Salad
We all liked these potatoes a lot.  The potato bakes up so moist and absolutely creamy.  The only thing I will change is that I didn’t line the Crock Pot with a liner and the oil and salt dripped off a bit making a little mess.  But plenty also stays on the potato creating a slight crispness and salty flavor!

Take your pick which recipe to use, neither one will disappoint.

Happy Baking,
~Catherine
