Halloween is almost here, and during this fun and scary season, many people, especially little kids, are excited and looking forward to fun-filled activities.
For some of us, one thing that we look forward to during October is experimenting with delightful yet creepy Halloween themed food to serve to the family, and might I recommend these Halloween Hot Dog Fingers?
Any quick Pinterest search will yield the standard look for hot dog inspired Halloween finger foods. Today, we are throwing those out the window and taking on a NEW APPROACH to classic Halloween hot dog fingers.
For this Halloween finger recipe, we transform a short stubby hot dog into a creepy looking finger, not just by slicing or decorating it though! We will be using a simple shortening based crust recipe to make the hot dogs look like fingers!
These Halloween hot dog fingers can be as creepy as your heart’s desire. As the simple crust coating adds the look of scaly, flaky, warty, and scabby skin. While it may look gross (which is the point of this Halloween finger food), it tastes great!
Halloween Hot Dog Finger Ingredients:
180 g All-purpose flour, 1 tsp salt, 80 g shortening, 4 – 8 tbsp cold water, 16 hot dogs
How to make Halloween Hot Dog Fingers
In a mixing bowl combine the flour, salt, and shortening.
Using your fingers, mix the shortening to the flour until it resembles a coarse meal where there are big chunks of shortening. Take note that bigger pieces of fat means flakier crust.
Now carefully add ice-cold water by the tablespoon. The amount of cold water will depend on your area’s humidity and the kind of flour that you used. But it should range from 4 to 8 tablespoons of cold water.
Mix the dough with water until you’re able to form or shape it into a ball. Do not overwater because it will toughen the crust.
Wrap the dough with plastic and shape into a disk. Allow the dough to rest for half an hour to relax the gluten.
After 30 minutes, prepare the hot dogs, a rolling pin, extra flour for dusting and a sharp paring knife.
Dust the working area or a wood chopping board and place the dough. Slice to 8 equal sizes and set aside.
Grab 1 piece of the dough and roll. Using the wooden pin, flatten the dough. Divide into two.
Prepare an egg wash and lightly brush each piece of flatten dough with egg. Now place one hot dog on each piece of the dough. Carefully roll the hot dog and seal the edges to form a log.
These logs will be our Halloween Hot Dog Fingers, but to complete the look, we have to add markings that are similar to our fingers. Using the sharp knife, draw a finger onto the logs and add some lines to make it look like your finger.
If you want to go the extra mile, you can cut a small piece of dough and shape a fingernail-like piece to make the fingers look creepier. Repeat the process until you’ve used up all the dough and hot dogs.
To cook, pre-heat oil for deep frying. Make sure that the temperature is in low heat only to avoid burning the dough. You may have good results with your favorite Air Fryer too!
Fry each piece until light brown. Drain excess oil and serve with ketchup (blood).
Bonus: For extra detail in your blood ketchup, just add a little black and red food coloring to your favorite ketchup. Drizzle the ketchup or let it drip in some areas of the Halloween Hot Dog Fingers to make it look like the fingers are bleeding.
